If you want an opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and aromas
of typical Lombardy cooking, "Cascina di Mezzo" is the place for
you.
Situated about 10 miles outside Milan, at the heart of the Sud
Milano agricultural park, this old farmhouse was converted into
a holiday farm at the end of the 1980s, in keeping with the local
traditional style.
All the food served to guests by the Pirola family, who own and
run the farm, is home produced, and the menus follow the seasons
to ensure nothing but the best.
And if you want to take the taste of real food back home with you, the farm sells fresh meat and poultry, cooked meats and preserves; you can also book cakes, savoury pancakes, ravioli, stuffed chicken and turkey roasts.
During the winter, guests eat in the converted granary with its beamed ceilings, ceramic stoves and open fireplaces.
After the tempting selection of antipasti, the menu offers polenta and càsoeûla (a pork stew with cabbage), braised beef, pasta and beans, bolliti misti (a platter of assorted boiled meats), duck with cinnamon.
Cakes and tarts made with home-made jam are a treat for the sweet-toothed.
In spring and summer, the dining room transfers to the former stables, with wheelchair access, where the old fodder troughs
make perfect plant-holders and the spacious verandah provides an ideal setting for aperitifs and antipasti.
Seasonal specialities include risotto with herbs, tortelloni filled with minced greens and saffron, pork cooked in vinegar, stuffed chicken
breasts.
Fresh fruit flans and apple-based semifreddi with strawberry coulis are just some of the desserts on offer.
The farm has four lodgings for guests: one two-room flat and three one-room units.
Converted from the old farm-workers cottages, the lodgings are simply but comfortably furnished.
